Publishing Concepts, Inc (PCI), the company printing the new 2012 Alumni Directory, has informed the College that the directory has now shipped and should be arriving within a few days. Associate Professor of Theatre Tracie Lynn Duncan Nominated

Associate Professor of Theatre Tracie Lynn Duncan was recently nominated for Best Set Design and Best Lighting Design for the 2012 Broadway World Columbus Awards (http://columbus.broadwayworld.com/vote2012region.cfm#sthash.8TsQueVc.dpbs) for her work on the 2012 summer production of King Lear. In addition to the recognition given to Duncan, senior Patrick McGregor II received three nominations, including a nomination in the Person to Watch category.

Duncan is slated to design for the Clockwise Theatre in Waukegan, Ill., a member of the Chicago Area Theatre group, for their upcoming productions of Cars and Quinceaneras by Susan Lieberman and the world premiere of Party in the Kitchen written by Madelyn Sergel.

2013 Girls High Schools FUTSAL Tournament to be Held

The Bethany College Women’s Soccer Program will host on Jan.5-6 the 2013 Girls High School FUTSAL Tournament in the Thomas Phillips Johnson Recreation Center on Bethany’s campus. The tournament is open to all girls’ soccer players in grades 9-12.

The tournament will be played using FUTSAL goals and the lines on the court as boundaries. The tournament will be a six-on-six format and games will last 32 minutes and will have a continuous clock. Each team will be allowed a maximum of 10 girls on the roster. The cost of the tournament is $250 per team.

Fields Leads Forum on Assessment and Institutional Effectiveness

Dr. Darin E. Fields, vice president for academic affairs and dean of the faculty, recently attended the Council of Independent Colleges’ Chief Academic Officer's Institute in San Antonio. The Institute focused on the core responsibilities of the chief academic officer and the importance of strong academic leadership in today’s changing higher education environment. Fields led a forum on Assessment and Institutional Effectiveness for new Chief Academic Officers participating in the New CAO workshop.

Bethany College Continues to Expand and Upgrade Campus Technology

As part of Bethany College's continuing efforts to bring high quality technology services to the campus community and to students, we are pleased to announce that wireless access will be completed for Campbell Village residence halls during the Thanksgiving break.

Upon return to campus, students will enjoy wireless access throughout the Campbell Village complex. In addition to the wireless upgrades, additional network access control is being implemented to provide enhanced management of access to campus computing resources, ensuring more users have appropriate anti-virus protection, system updates, and configurations.

Light Up Night at Bethany Brightens Community and Campus

Bethany College will host its 2^nd annual Light Up Night at 7 p.m. on Nov. 29 in Commencement Hall. The celebration will include the lighting of the College’s tree by President Scott D. Miller and a variety of presentations on holiday themes, as well as a charity tree auction.

The evening will begin with a welcome by Dr. Miller and will be followed by educational presentations on some of the major holidays of the season, including Christmas, Jewish Hanukkah, African American Kwanza and more.

Bethany’s Foster Voted Capital One Academic All-District II

Bethany College senior Johnathan Foster (Cumberland, Md./Fort Hill) added to his growing list of accomplishments, as he was voted to the Capital One Academic All-District II football team, as presented by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA).

To be eligible, a student-athlete must be a varsity starter or key reserve, maintain a cumulative G.P.A. of 3.30 on a scale of 4.00, have reached sophomore athletic and academic standing at their current institution and be nominated by their sports information director. All Division III institutions in Connecticut, Delaware, District of Columbia, Kentucky, Maryland, New Jersey, Rhode Island and West Virginia make up District II.

Bethany Places Two on Academic All-District II Volleyball Team

For the second consecutive year, the Bethany College volleyball team had multiple players earn spots on the Capital One Academic All-District II team, as seniors Jessica Zavatchen (Uniontown, Pa./Laurel Highlands) and Taylor Cassidy (Barboursville, W.Va./Cabell Midland) were recognized for their athletic and academic achievements.

To be eligible, a student-athlete must be a varsity starter or key reserve, maintain a cumulative GPA of 3.30 on a scale of 4.00, have reached sophomore athletic and academic standing at their current institution and be nominated by their sports information director. Bethany and IRD Video Released

A video promoting Bethany College and International Relief & Development (IRD), Arlington, Va., has been completed and is available for viewing at www.bethanywv.edu/academics/studyabroad/.

The project was produced by Bethany’s Department of Communication and Media Arts and managed on campus by Department Chair M.E. Yancosek Gamble, in conjunction with an independent video-production company and officials of IRD. The video, highlighting Bethany’s international-study opportunities and IRD’s humanitarian programs, features interviews with Bethany students, faculty and administration, and coverage of overseas relief programs by IRD. Bethany and the agency are pursuing additional collaborations, including an online international journal and internships for Bethany students.

Bethany College Capital Campaign Reaches $44 Million

Officials at Bethany College announced Thursday that “Transformation Now!: The Campaign for Bethany College” has reached the $44 million mark in gifts and pledges.

Launched during the 2008-09 academic year, the campaign has a Phase I, five-year goal of $52 million for capital improvements, endowment and operations, according to Dr. Scott D. Miller, President of the College. The overall goal is to raise $68 million by 2019-20 to fully fund the College’s master plan, “Bethany 2020.”

Bethany Alum Vogrin ’95 Sworn in as West Virginia ADA

Stephen L. Vogrin ‘95 was formally sworn in as an Assistant United States Attorney for the Northern District of West Virginia Monday in federal court. Upon a motion made by U.S. Attorney William Ihlenfeld, II, Vogrin was administered the oath of office in United States District Court by Chief Judge John Preston Bailey.

Spanish Club Sponsors Dia De Los Muertos Celebration

Bethany’s 16th annual community-wide Día de los Muertos (Day of the Dead) celebration was held to rave reviews on Oct. 29. Sponsored by the Bethany College Spanish Club, and led by WLAC Section Senior Fellow Gabriela Núñez and Club President Chelsea Sebetich, the cultural celebration commemorated the event that is celebrated on Nov. 1-2 each year throughout the Spanish-speaking world, especially in Mexico.

Authentic Mexican-style food and drink, prayers, poetry, and music in Spanish were enjoyed by a large number of Bethany students, staff and faculty.  The event was organized by chair of the world languages and cultures department Joe Lovano, professor of finance Anju Ramjee, professor of world languages and cultures Harald Menz and Kim Lawless.

Bethany President Attends ACA Meeting

Bethany College President Scott D. Miller attended the quarterly meeting of the Appalachian College Association Executive Committee in Bluefield, Va. this week.  The ACA is a non-profit consortium of 36 private four-year liberal arts institutions spread across the central Appalachian Mountains in Kentucky, North Carolina, Tennessee, Virginia, and West Virginia. Collectively these higher education institutions serve over 54,000 students.  Miller represents the colleges from West Virginia on the Executive Committee.

Congressman McKinley Visits Campus

West Virginia First District Congressman David B. McKinley, P.E., met with Bethany students and senior administration on Oct. 26 during a campus visit.

A native of Wheeling, Congressman McKinley is a first-term member of the U.S. House of Representatives who sits on the House Committee on Energy and Commerce.

He was briefed on higher-education issues by President Scott D. Miller; Dr. Darin E. Fields, vice president for academic affairs and dean of the faculty; William R. Kiefer, executive vice president and general counsel; and Dr. Mort Gamble, executive assistant to the president.

Wyman ’64 Receives Cornell Runestad Award

Dr. William Wyman ’64 recently received the Cornell Runestad Award as a part of the 50th anniversary celebration of the Nebraska Choral Directors Association. The award is given for life-long dedication to choral excellence.

Wyman is only the ninth recipient of the award, and follows his Fulbright Scholar Award in Korea, Nebraska Choral Director’s Association Choral Director of the Year, Nebraska Music Educators Association Hall of Fame election, the City of Lincoln Mayor’s Award for Arts Leadership and Bethany College’s Alumni Achievement Award.
