Gamble to Present Paper on Historic Site of Beatles’ First U.S. Concert

“The Washington Coliseum: Where the Circus, and Much More, Once Reigned in Our Nation’s Capital” will be presented by Dr. Mort Gamble, assistant to the president, at the 2013 joint conference of the Popular Culture Association/American Culture Association in Washington, D.C.

The paper will focus on the former Uline Arena’s colorful history as a Washington, D.C., sports, concert, and circus arena which hosted the first live U.S. concert by the Beatles in 1964, following their appearance on “The Ed Sullivan Show.” Gamble’s paper will also reference the exciting new possibilities for the building’s proposed preservation and rehabilitation as a mixed-use facility in Northeast Washington.
