Gamble Represents Bethany at State Cast Iron Cook-Off
M.E. Yancosek Gamble, chair of the Department of Communications and Media Arts, represented Bethany College and served as M.C. of the state Cast Iron Cook-Off, January 20-21, at The Greenbrier Resort, White Sulphur Springs, West Virginia.
The culinary competition is sponsored by The Collaborative for the 21st Century Appalachia, directed by its founder Dr. Allen Arnold. In 2010, Bethany participated on a cooking team sponsored by College alumnus George Manahan’s The Manahan Group public relations agency and Bridge Road Bistro, both of Charleston. Manahan is the professional advisor for the Bethany College chapter of the Public Relations Student Society of America.
The annual Cast Iron Cook-Off is a “culinary extravaganza that showcases regional New Appalachian Cuisine, emphasizing indigenous ingredients and traditional cookware, like cast iron. Cultural events such as the Cook-Off promote current health findings, serve as valuable opportunities for chefs and farmers to connect, and remind people of the value in good, honest food,” according to the Collaborative’s website www.wvfarm2u.org.
Gamble, a volunteer promoter for the Cook-Off, first became associated with the Collaborative when she worked in Charleston as a member of Governor Joe Manchin’s economic development team. The Collaborative has developed video training modules on the emerging agri-culinary market, value-added and specialty farm products, and the earth-to-table/buy local movement.

Lynn Waltz Appointed Interim Assistant Director at Old Dominion University
Old Dominion University has appointed Lynn Waltz '78 as interim
assistant director of its ODU Tri-Cities Center. Waltz previously
served as a student success and outreach specialist at ODU Tri-Cities,
and she has also taught English at both Tidewater Community College and
Old Dominion University. Waltz previously worked as a reporter for The
Virginian-Pilot. Waltz earned a master of fine arts in creative
writing from Old Dominion University and a bachelor of arts in English
from Bethany College.
ODU Tri-Cities is a full-service facility offering bachelor’s and graduate degree and certificate programs, as well as onsite university admissions, advising and other success services for residents of Portsmouth, Chesapeake, Suffolk and surrounding localities.

Arthur Keys Earns Emory Honor for International Relief, Development Work

Development (IRD) in Arlington, Va., has earned the Emory Honor for
International Relief, Development Work.

Bethany College President Active with Church, Higher Education Organizations
It’s been a busy couple of weeks for Bethany College’s president with a number of national associations and organizations.
- January 2-4 he chaired the Council of Independent Colleges (CIC) New Presidents Program in Florida. He has served on the faculty of the program for 15 years, chairing the last 11.
- January 3-5 he attended the Council of Independent Colleges Presidents Institute in Florida. He presented and served on a panel entitled “The Future of the Humanities and Liberal Arts Colleges” Other presenters/panelists included: Dr. Georgia Nugent (President, Kenyon College), Dr. Christopher Nelson (President, St. John’s College), Dr. Ron Crutcher (President, Wheaton College).
- January 3 he attended the annual meeting of The Council of Colleges and Universities of The Christian Church (Disciples of Christ). He was elected to a two year term as Chair of The Council and will represent TCCUCC on the Board of Directors of the Higher Education and Leadership Ministry (HELM) of the Christian Church.
- January 5 he attended the annual meeting of the Board of Directors of the InterAmerican Consortium, a partnership of 6 U.S. and 11 foreign institutions. He is in his 13th year as Chair of IAC.
- January 9-10 he was in Washington, D.C. for the meeting of the Board of Directors of Academic Search, Inc. (AS, Inc.) and Board of Directors of the American Academic Leadership Institute (AALI). He was elected (beginning in June) as Chair of the AS, Inc. Board and will become Vice Chair of the Board of AALI that same month.
