Faculty Spotlight

Education
The Bethany College-Hancock County Response to Intervention-Professional Development School Grant team completed a joint presentation at the Annual West Virginia Reading Association at the Greenbrier in November. The title of the presentation was “RTI Under Construction- What is in your toolkit?” Assistant Professor of Education Janice Garrison Shepherd presented on reading assessments and interventions for RTI. County board representative Betty McGillen, school principal Dan Enich, and school reading specialists and special education team members (Karen Pitchok, Kelly Summers, and Kathy Griffith, who attended Bethany) presented on their parts in this successful implementation at Weir Middle School. The implementation will be moving to the high school level for the final two years of the grant.

Humanities
Larry Grimes, professor of English emeritus and director of church relations, was included in The Southern Poetry Anthology: Vol. III, Contemporary Appalachian Poets. Also included in the anthology was work by Bethany graduate Jessie Janeshek. Janeshek’s first volume of poems, Invisible Mink, was published in November 2010.

Visual and Performing Arts
Assistant Professor Pandel Collaros and his J-Term class "Readings in Rock Scholarship" produced a video to help immerse participants in the world of classic rocker Neil Young. Their version of "Cortez, the Killer" is on YouTube at http://www.youtube.com/user/PandelCollaros#p/u/12/nnRgdqAwBX4.
