“The Harbinger” Release Party to be Held

The 2012 edition of Bethany College's literary magazine “The Harbinger”will be released on April 19. In celebration of the magazine's publication, a launch party will be held in the Academic Parlour at 7 p.m. on April 19. Contributors will read from their published poetry, fiction and creative nonfiction. Refreshments including desserts, coffee and tea will be served. Bethany senior English major Taylor Cassidy edited the 2012 edition. Jessie Janeshek, assistant professor of English, is the faculty advisor of “The Harbinger.”

Allison Engel to be Featured Speaker at Darline Nicholson May Morning Breakfast

Allison Engel '94, vice president of executive services at PNC Bank, will be the featured speaker at the 66^th annual Darline Nicholson May Morning Breakfast to be held at 9:30 a.m. on May 4 in Benedum Commons.
 
Engel attended Bethany from 1990 to 1994 as an international economics major. Later, in 1995, she acquired her Slovene Language Proficiency Certificate from the University of Ljubljana before beginning her career in the retail services group at PNC Bank. In 1998, Engel joined Mellon Bank serving as an associate relationship manager in the international financial institutions group. During her time at PNC and Mellon, Engel attended the University of Pittsburgh Joseph M. Katz Graduate School of Business where she received her MBA in 1999.

The Darline Nicholson May Morning Breakfast began in 1947 as the May Morning Breakfast, which was an event intended to bring female faculty members and senior women together to honor the soon-to-be graduates. The Panhellenic Council assumed sponsorship of the breakfast during the 1960s and the event was expanded to include all female Bethany College students, faculty and staff along with invited guests. In the early 1970s a fashion show was added as part of the festivities. The May Morning Breakfast was renamed the Darline Nicholson May Morning Breakfast in 2000.

Bethany College Students Inducted into Kappa Mu Epsilon Mathematics Honorary Society

On Wednesday, Bethany College welcomed 11 students and two faculty members in the Kappa Mu Epsilon Mathematics Honorary Society.

Those inducted were students William Bambury, Cameron Cooper, Halee Cramer, Alex Delgiorno, Jacob Fisher, Thal Kratzke, Dustin Maiolo, Corey Mays, Tyler Pannebaker, Chelsea Skroka and Kristen Skroka, and faculty members Lisa Reilly, chair and assistant professor of chemistry, and Joseph Walsh, assistant professor of mathematics.

Kappa Mu Epsilon is a mathematics honor society founded in 1930 to focus on the needs of undergraduate mathematics students with more than 100 chapters at various American universities and colleges.

Bethany Joins Other Institutions for Higher Education Day in Charleston

President Scott D. Miller and Bethany College had a full day on March 21 during the annual Higher Education Day at the Legislature in Charleston, W.Va.

Bethany joined West Virginia’s other four-year and two-year institutions in the day’s activities, which included an informational display in the Upper Rotunda and meetings with public officials.

Miller participated in the Proclamation Presentation by Governor Earl Ray Tomblin at the Governor’s Reception Room, and presentations of a higher-education citation in the House Chamber and a resolution in the Senate Chamber. He then led discussion with other presidents and West Virginia Independent Colleges and Universities Executive Director Ben Exley during meetings with legislators including Delegate Mary Poling, House Education Chair; Sen. Robert Plymale, Senate Education Chair; and Senate President Jeff Kessler.

Mort Gamble, executive assistant to President Miller, and M.E. Yancosek Gamble, chair of the department of communications and media arts, also represented Bethany during Higher Education Day at the Legislature, which is sponsored by the West Virginia Higher Education Policy Commission.

Book Release Party to be Held for Professor Lamson

A release party will be held on the Bethany College campus for Assistant Professor of English, Brandon Lamson’s 2012 Juniper Prize winning collection of poetry “Starship Tahiti” from 4-6 p.m. on April 12 in the academic parlor.
 
Lamson will give a reading of his work and will be followed by a reception where collection will be available for purchase and signing. Words & Music Bookshop from Stratford Springs in Wheeling will also be selling books at the event.

“Starship Tahiti” is Lamson’s first book of poems. A 2010 graduate of the University of Houston Creative Writing Program, he is also the author of a chapbook of poems titled “Houston Gothic,” which was published in 2007. His work is also in a forthcoming analogy to be published this year titled “Poets for Living Waters: An International Response to the BP Oil Disaster in the Gulf of Mexico.”
