WVU College of Law Director of Admissions Visits
Tina Jernigan, Director of Admissions, of the WVU College of Law, spoke in Morlan Lounge on Tuesday, February 28. She presented to interested pre-law students about WVU's programs, the opportunities for practicing law in West Virginia, the Summer Law Institute at WVU for undergraduates, and the steps needed for success in the law school admissions process. Professor Sable Speaks in Ambridge on Egypt and the Arab Spring
On Sunday, February 26, Dr. Marc Sable of the Department of History and Political Science gave a presentation at the Beth Samuel Jewish Center in Ambridge, PA. The talk highlighted the "soft authoritarianism" of the Mubarak regime, the different strands within the Islamic movement in Egypt (and within the Muslim Brotherhood), the continuing role of the military and implications of the Arab Spring for Israel and for US foreign policy.

Bethany College to Participate in Teagle Grant Funded Initiative

Swim Lessons to be Offered by Bethany College Swim Team

Swimming lessons will be taught by members of Bethany College’s Swimming Team and supervised by Head Coach David Dow. Students of all abilities age 4 and older are welcome.

Lessons will be offered four nights a week (Monday-Thursday) for two weeks. Choose the EARLY (4:30-5:10 p.m.) or LATE (5:20-6:00 p.m.) time period.

    Weekday Sessions:
    SESSION I    March 19 - 29     SESSION II    April 2 - 12     SESSION III    April 16 - 26

There is also a weekend session available (Saturday-Sunday) for three consecutive weeks (12-12:50 p.m.)
    March 24 - 25    March 31 - April 1    April 14 - 15

Gamble, Jolliffe Continue Service to WVU English Department Visiting Committee

Dr. Mort Gamble, assistant to the president, has renewed his commitment as a member of the alumni Visiting Committee of the West Virginia University Department of English. He will serve through 2015.

Gamble, who has undergraduate and graduate degrees in English from WVU, drafted the last two reports of the Visiting Committee.

Dr. David A. Jolliffe ’74, Professor, Brown Chair in English Literacy at the University of Arkansas, is also a continuing member of the Visiting Committee. He received his Master of Arts in English from WVU in 1980.

Business and Economics
David Youngberg, Assistant Professor of Economics attended the 23rd annual Teaching Economics Conference at Robert Morris University last week. The conference was designed to address the interests of teachers of college level economics. Participants at the first twenty conferences represented over 100 colleges and universities from 35 states, the District of Columbia, and Canada. Participant presentations were included as complements to the scheduled speakers. Speakers at past conferences include Stanley Brue, James Buchanan, David Colander, Susan Feiner, Robert Frank, Denise Hazlett, Campbell R. McConnell, Michael Salemi, Phillip Saunders, Bradley Schiller, John Siegfried, William Walstad, and Michael Watts.

Social Work
Katherine Shelek-Furbee, Chair and Professor of Social Work, and Melanee W. Sinclair, Associate Professor and Coordinator of Field Placements, attended a training session sponsored by the Council on Social Work Education on February 24 and 25 in Alexandria, Virginia. The two-day training will provide the basis for beginning the self-study due in April 2013. The Council on Social Work Education has accredited the Social Work Program since the 1983-84 academic year.

Bethany hosts The Pittsburgh Fellows
On Tuesday, February 21st, Bethany College representatives and students met with Becca Chapman, Director of The Pittsburgh Fellows. The Fellows is a nine-month, post-graduate leadership program “pursuing the goal of raising up the next generation of ethical and values-driven leaders in all sectors of society who have fully integrated their faith with their calling.”Today, more than ever before, there is a clear need for ethical leaders in the business world.

The Pittsburgh Fellows program offers college graduates the opportunity to launch their careers through a nine-month paid internship while further developing their Christian leadership skills. Each Fellow works Monday through Thursday in an internship position with a local business chosen to match the fellow’s interests and qualifications, then joins the other Fellows in graduate level Leadership Formation and Christian Studies courses on Friday, earning 12 graduate credits from Trinity School for Ministry. Throughout the nine-month program there are opportunities to attend national and regional conferences, paid for by The Fellows program. Fellows also participate in weekly service activities and meet with a mentor bi-weekly for encouragement and support. Once weekly dinners bring the Fellows together for bonding and relaxation. Housing is provided at no charge, the program covers travel and education costs, and each Fellow receives an $18,000.00 stipend to cover food and personal expenses.

Many Pittsburgh Fellows continue in their employment at the end of the nine months, while others make contacts leading to full-time employment. Employers love the solid character and excellent preparation of students who come through this program. Most Fellows alumni have settled in the Pittsburgh region and are now contributing positively to the business climate in our city. This is a wonderful opportunity to you're your career off to a solid start by developing professional connections and adjusting to life a beautiful and growth-oriented city.

American Council of Education Fellow Visits Bethany

Bethany College welcomed to campus Scott A. Carnicom, Ph.D. Associate Dean of the Honors College at Middle Tennessee State University and currently an ACE Fellow at Kenyon College along with Nick Perlick '00, Director of Development Middle Tennessee State University. During the day long visit, Dr. Carnicom and Mr. Perlick met with President Miller, Darin Fields, Vice President for Academic Affairs, and Sven de Jong, Vice President for Advancement to discuss institutional leadership and operations as part of Dr. Carnicom's ACE Fellowship development program. The visit concluded with dinner at Christman Manor at Pendleton Heights with President Miller and his wife Annie, Vice President Fields, Vice President de Jong, and Vice President Bill Kiefer.

Taiko Drumming Group Performs

The group was formed out of the Bethany College Japan Outreach program. The group drums to promote awareness and understanding of Japanese culture. Taiko drumming is powerful, dynamic and fun.

Bethany College Taiko Drumming Group was the main performer for the Multicultural Day at Brooke High School on February 17. The group gave superb performance and received standing ovation.

The group members performed at Brooke High School were students George Cothran, Chelsea Marshal, Jamez Murray-Earliwine, Ashley Pack and Khristian Smith and professors Fujiko Sawtarie, Melanee Sinclair and Sachiko Wood. Nobuyuki Tanaka is the coordinator for the group.

The group is also invited as a main performer for the Cherry Blossom Festival at Ohio University, Athens Ohio, on April 15.

Bethany Theatre to Present “A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum”

The Bethany College Theatre Department will present “A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum” March 29 — 31 at 8 p.m. in Wailes Theatre on the Bethany College Campus.

“A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum” is a witty and irreverent musical comedy that takes place in ancient Rome and is inspired by the absurd comedies of the Roman playwright Plautus. The show, directed in this production by Bethany College senior Patrick McGregor and features senior Joey Albus in the lead role of Pseudolus, tells the story of a slave trying to win his freedom by playing matchmaker with his young master and the girl next door. Various hilarious situations ensue, including masquerades, mistaken identities, cross-dressing and one very funny funeral.

“A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum” features music and lyrics by Stephen Sondheim and book by Larry Gelbart and Burt Shevelove. In its original 1962 Broadway run, it won several Tony Awards, including best Musical and Best Book. It has since enjoyed several revivals and was made into a successful film.

Bethany Alum Named Coach of the Year

Bethany Alum and Hartwick head coach Todd McGuinness '02 was selected by his peers as the Empire 8 Conference Coach of the Year. McGuinness has led the Hawks to the Empire 8 Tournament for the second straight year. Hartwick finished the regular season with a record of 23-2 which ties the program-high for wins. The Hawks also set a record for most conference wins with 12.

Dr. David Rudari and Ms. Sun Jung Lee of the Music Faculty presented a recital at St. Joseph Cathedral, Wheeling, WV on Sunday, February 19. Featured artist was Mr. Casey Gray, Tenor (Bethany Class of 2009). Repertoire was from the works of Handel, Teleman, Schubert, Verdi, Ravel, Puccini, and Bizet.

Associate Professor of Theatre and Director of Technical Theatre, Tracie Lynn Duncan, in her role as a member of New Players Theater in Columbus, OH will be presenting: Mark Twain's THE DIARIES OF ADAM AND EVE, staring NPT company members, award winning actors, and real-life sweethearts Mark Mann and Danielle Mann.

The Diaries of Adam and Eve is based on EXTRACTS FROM ADAM’S DIARY (1904) and EVE’S DIARY (1906). Twain’s own unique take on the Creation Story shows us that, as Shakespeare said, “the course of true love never did run smooth”.

Ms. Duncan serves as New Players Production Designer and Technical Director, in addition to serving on the artistic board.

History and Political Science
On Friday, February 10, Marc Sable, Assistant Professor of Political Science, gave a talk entitled, "Egypt after the Arab Spring," at the University of South Carolina at Beaufort's Osher Lifelong Learning Institute. A large audience of between 80 and 100 offered well-informed questions about Egypt's recent elections, the character of the Muslim Brotherhood and the implications for foreign policy.

Play4Kay Fundraiser Event Held at Bethany

For the fifth consecutive year, the Bethany women's basketball program participated in the WBCA's Play 4Kay event. It's a nation-wide effort that joins hundreds of basketball programs to raise funds and awareness in the battle against cancer. The basketball program partnered with the Zeta Tau Alpha sorority, whose philanthropy is the Susan G. Komen For the Cure, to raffle off two gift bags, gift cards, t-shirts, bracelets, rally towels and keychains. By the end of the night, their efforts helped raise $743, but it's not too late to give. Dr. David J. Rudari, Assistant Professor of Music and Ms. Sun Jung Lee, Distinguished Lecturer in Music, Piano, were Guest Conductor and Accompanist for the 2012 Pittsburgh Diocese High School Honors Choir festival, held at Oakland Catholic High School and Seton-LaSalle High School on Friday, February 3. The program featured works by Copland, Andre Thomas, Matthias Seiber, Verdi, and Randall Thompson. This marks Dr. Rudari's third appearance as Guest Conductor with the Diocese of Pittsburgh, and Ms. Lee's first.

Assistant Professor of Music Pandel Collaros engineered the recording of alumna Amanda McCoy's bass performance for "The Coming Down Rain," a new song by the progressive rock band Zasz. To hear the finished song and learn more about Zasz, go to www.zaszmusic.com.

The official launch event for Wiley Cash's first novel, A Land More Kind Than Home, is scheduled for Sat., April 21 at 4 p.m. in the Renner Art Gallery on the campus of Bethany College. There will be a reading, followed by a book signing. Books will be available to purchase, and a portion of the proceeds will go to raise money for the Brooke County Library. Bethany College has announced Rev. Dr. Sharon E. Watkins as the featured speaker for the 57th annual Oreon E. Scott Lectures, to be hosted by the college March 26-27 at Bethany's Mountainside Conference Center. Kalon Scholars to Hold Leadership Academy

The Kalon Scholar Service Leaders will be holding a Leadership Academy on Saturday, February 11 to help Bethany Students expand their leadership potential and gain valuable experience for their future education or employment.

The event will take place at Bethany’s Mountainside Conference Center from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. and will feature Chad Barnett, Bethany alumnus and Headmaster of the Linsly School, as keynote speaker with his presentation on “Using the College Experience to Maximize Your Leadership Potential”. Other session topics will include “Personality Types and Leadership”, “Managing vs. Leading”, “Conflict Resolution” and “Team Building”.

Chad Barnett is a recipient of the NAIS Edward E. Ford Fellowship Award for Emerging Leaders and is a published scholar with another forthcoming article in Philosophical Studies in Education. He has served as Headmaster of Linsly School since 2008, and has previously served the school as Director of Admissions, Director of Summer School, English teacher, basketball and soccer coach, dormitory master, and intern. He is currently pursuing his Ph.D. in Educational Leadership through the University of Pittsburgh, where he serves as Teaching Fellow at the School of Education with a graduate course on Education and Society.

The Kalon Leadership Academy is free and open to all Bethany students. Participants will receive a certificate for attending.

PNC Bank – Pittsburgh President To Deliver Commencement Address at Bethany College

BETHANY, W.Va. – Sy Holzer, President of PNC Bank –Pittsburgh, will deliver the keynote address at the 172^ndAnniversary Commencement Ceremony at Bethany College, according to Dr.Scott D. Miller, President of the College.

Commencement will be held May 12 at 10 a.m. in the TilockAmphitheatre in the Pennington Quadrangle.

“As the state's oldest private college, Bethany has been asmall college of national distinction," Dr. Miller said. “SyHolzer is a highly respected leader in the Pittsburgh corporatecommunity—a community that has been an important part of ourhistory. It is fitting and proper that our graduates have theopportunity to hear firsthand from a leader of hisprominence.”

Holzer has overall client, community and employeeresponsibilities, which include Corporate & Institutional Banking,Commercial Banking and Wealth Management in Western Pennsylvania. He alsooversees financial services relationships with all large governmententities, higher education institutions, health care organizations andlabor unions throughout the ten-county Southwestern Pennsylvaniamarket. He also has corporate-wide responsibility for allinternational labor unions.

Holzer joined the bank in 1971 and has held various executivepositions in corporate and retail banking. He was named President of PNCBank - Pittsburgh in May 1997 and is Co-Chair of the PNC ManagementCommittee.

On January 7, Herb Weaver, Professor of Fine Arts, delivered the keynote address at the "Advanced Placement Strategies Conference & Workshop" in Dallas, Texas. Titled "Look Up From Your Art", the content of the address focused on innovative art curricula for high school teachers.

Luke Hardt, Associate Professor of Theatre, Director of the Bethany College Theatre, and Chair of the Department of Visual and Performing Arts, has a principal role in an upcoming mini-series, 'The Men Who Built America' for the History Channel. The episode is an enactment of The Homestead Riots and Luke is the leader of the Pinkertons, Bill Heinde. You may not recognize him as he is bearded, toting a gun and pistol-whipping a striker. He's back to normal now.

Heather Ricciuti, The Mary Cutlip Director of Libraries & Learning Resources, traveled to the University of Charleston in West Virginia on January 9th for the 2012 Appalachian College Association Summit Planning Committee meeting. ACA Summit XV, "The Changing Landscape of Higher Education in Appalachia: Opportunities, Challenges, and Successes," will be held at the Knoxville Convention Center in Knoxville, Tennessee on Friday, October 12 and Saturday, October 13, 2012.

Gamble Represents Bethany at State Cast Iron Cook-Off

M.E. Yancosek Gamble, chair of the Department of Communications and Media Arts, represented Bethany College and served as M.C. of the state Cast Iron Cook-Off, January 20-21, at The Greenbrier Resort, White Sulphur Springs, West Virginia.

The culinary competition is sponsored by The Collaborative for the 21st Century Appalachia, directed by its founder Dr. Allen Arnold. In 2010, Bethany participated on a cooking team sponsored by College alumnus George Manahan’s The Manahan Group public relations agency and Bridge Road Bistro, both of Charleston. Manahan is the professional advisor for the Bethany College chapter of the Public Relations Student Society of America.

The annual Cast Iron Cook-Off is a “culinary extravaganza that showcases regional New Appalachian Cuisine, emphasizing indigenous ingredients and traditional cookware, like cast iron. Old Dominion University has appointed Lynn Waltz '78 as interim assistant director of its ODU Tri-Cities Center. Waltz previously served as a student success and outreach specialist at ODU Tri-Cities, and she has also taught English at both Tidewater Community College and Old Dominion University. Waltz previously worked as a reporter for The Virginian-Pilot. Waltz earned a master of fine arts in creative writing from Old Dominion University and a bachelor of arts in English from Bethany College.

It’s been a busy couple of weeks for Bethany College’s president with a number of national associations and organizations.

January 2-4 he chaired the Council of Independent Colleges (CIC) New Presidents Program in Florida. He has served on the faculty of the program for 15 years, chairing the last 11.
January 3-5 he attended the Council of Independent Colleges Presidents Institute in Florida. He presented and served on a panel entitled “The Future of the Humanities and Liberal Arts Colleges” Other presenters/panelists included: Dr. Georgia Nugent (President, Kenyon College), Dr. Christopher Nelson (President, St. John’s College), Dr. Ron Crutcher (President, Wheaton College).
January 3 he attended the annual meeting of The Council of Colleges and Universities of The Christian Church (Disciples of Christ). He was elected to a two year term as Chair of The Council and will represent TCCUCC on the Board of Directors of the Higher Education and Leadership Ministry (HELM) of the Christian Church.
January 5 he attended the annual meeting of the Board of Directors of the InterAmerican Consortium, a partnership of 6 U.S. and 11 foreign institutions. He is in his 13th year as Chair of IAC.
January 9-10 he was in Washington, D.C. for the meeting of the Board of Directors of Academic Search, Inc. (AS, Inc.) and Board of Directors of the American Academic Leadership Institute (AALI). He was elected (beginning in June) as Chair of the AS, Inc. Board and will become Vice Chair of the Board of AALI that same month.

Dr. Mort Gamble published two book reviews in the November-December issue of The White Tops, the official magazine and journal of the Circus Fans Association of America. Gamble reviewed two current biographical works of circus personalities: hand balancer Johnny Yong and the late sword swallower, tattoo artist and fire eater, the “Human Volcano,” Capt. Don Leslie. Gamble, a long-time historian and former circus employee, serves as a volunteer board member for the Circus Fans. He visited with circus performers in Sarasota, Fla., during the holiday break.

As the newly elected Chair of The Council of Colleges and Universities of the Christian Church (DOC), President Miller becomes an ex-officio member of the Board of Directors of the Higher Education and Leadership Ministry of the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ).

According to a release from HELM, new members of the Board include:

Rev. Sandhya Rani Jha serves as Senior Pastor of First Christian Church of Oakland and Director of the Oakland Peace Center. Her passion is liberation ethics as an academic field and as a lived experience in urban communities. She recently published “Room at the Table: The struggle for dignity and unity in Disciples history,” a book about people of color in the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ). Sandhya is co-moderator of the denomination’s Reconciliation Commission and an occasional consultant for Church Extension’s New Beginnings program. She joins the HELM board in the Class of 2015.

Rev. Dr. H. Ben Bohren is Regional Minister of the Christian Church of Northern California-Nevada. He came to that ministry after nearly 8 years as the Director of Church Relations for the Disciples National Benevolent Association. Prior to that he served 10 years as Director of Church Relations at Chapman University in Orange, CA. Prior to that, he served 20 years in pastoral ministry as senior minister at First Christian Church, Orange, CA; pastor at First Christian Church, Lebanon, KY; and student minister at Wintergreen and Beech Grove Christian Churches, Nelson Co. VA.

Dr. Scott D. Miller is the new chair of The Council of Colleges and Universities. He became president of Bethany College in 2007 after serving for over 10 years as President of Wesley College and seven as President of Lincoln Memorial University. He begins a two-year term as chair of the council.

Rev. Dr. D. Newell Williams begins a term as chair of the Council on Theological Education. He has been President and Professor of Modern and American Church History of Brite Divinity School at Texas Christian University since 2003. A historian of the Stone-Campbell Movement, Newell is the author of numerous books and was co-editor of The Encyclopedia of the Stone-Campbell Movement. He served as Moderator of The Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) in 2008-2009.

One of the many treasures of Bethany is the annual singing of carols. Once again this year, on December 7, Bethany faculty and students from the German and Spanish Clubs delighted the Bethany community with Christmas caroling. This all-student group was led by Harald Menz and Joseph Lovano, professors of world languages and cultures, together with Catherine Papp and Meghan Philp, German and Spanish Club presidents respectively. The group of more than a dozen sang Christmas carols in English, French, German, Italian, Latin and Spanish at several homes in the town of Bethany.

Library Hosts Second Annual Haunted Library

Bethany Residents Participate in Halloween Parade, Costume Contest

The Town of Bethany hosted, along with the sisters of Alpha Xi Delta, the Bethany Halloween Party on October 31. The event was held in the basement of the Bethany Memorial Church. Bethany VFD fire truck led the parade through Bethany before ending at the church, where the Halloween Party was held. Attendees enjoyed cider, cookies and caramel apples, while participants competed for the titles of Best Costume, Scariest, and Most Original. The Alpha Xi’s chose winners Sailor Girl, Dracula, the Duck Rider, Medieval Knight, Zombie Farmer Girl and the Extreme WVU Fan.

Stephanie Tuszynski, assistant professor of communications and media arts, traveled to Seattle to attend the international Association of Internet Researchers conference October 11-13. This was the 12th annual AoIR conference and Tuszynski's sixth acceptance. She presented a paper entitled "Fierce Resistance: Managing Multiple Identities in a Commercialized Marketplace" and also was asked to moderate a panel on fandom. R. Wiley Cash Jr., assistant professor of English, has completed his latest novel, A Land More Kind than Home. Bethany Lacrosse Raises Money for Special Olympics at Fall Tournament

The Bethany College men's lacrosse team participated in the Washington & Jefferson “Lacrosse For Special Olympics Tournament” on Saturday, Oct. 15th at Alexandre Stadium to raise money for Special Olympics. All proceeds from the all-day tournament were donated to the foundation’s Washington County chapter.

The Bison went 1-2 at the Tournament, which included a 6-4 win over Ohio Valley behind three goals from Brendan Wessells and a strong game in net by CJ Studnicky.

The Bethany women's basketball team took a short break from preseason practice on October 19 to volunteer at the Wheeling Soup Kitchen with the Wheeling Elks Lodge "Just For Kids" dinner program. Blaho ’96 was elected to serve as president of the Alumni Association Board of Directors. Blaho has served on the Board of Directors since 2003 and works as the product managing director for Sunguard Availability Services (Boston, Mass.). Bruce Fahey ’77 was elected to serve as vice president. Elected in 2010, Fahey is an attorney and shareholder with Kastner, Westman & Wilkins, LLC, located in Akron, Ohio.

Krsitie Bower Barnett ’97, vice president and senior trust officer with WesBanco (Wheeling, W.Va.), will continue to serve as chair of the Engagement Committee, while Craig Williams ’96, director of policy, state government affairs, Amgen, Inc. Senior Brittani Seeman of Rumson, N.J., and Matthew Robinson of Wheeling, W.Va., were crowned 2011 Homecoming Queen and King respectively during halftime of the October 8 football game against Westminster College.

Two two seniors were chosen from 10 members of the Homecoming Court that included: Nancy Hitt, Sara Reass, Francis Rios, Brittani Seeman and Hannah Sweetser for Queen; and Terry Davis, Justin Lipps, Anthony Palus, Matthew Robinson and J.C. Rucker for King.

Seeman, a psychology major, is the daughter of Christine and Joe Seeman. Representing the Phi Mu sorority, Seeman has been active on the Student Athletic Advisory Council and in Women’s Tennis.

The Language Conference was entitled “Fostering a Culture of Global Proficiency: Let’s Talk with the World.”

Bethany Featured in State Magazine, Goldenseal

Bethany College is featured in the summer 2011 issue of Goldenseal, West Virginia’s magazine of traditional life, published by the Division of Culture and History in Charleston.

The issue contains an article, co-authored by Dr. Mort Gamble and Laura Cramblet, which chronicles the history of the Wellsburg-to-Bethany trolley line. The railway served Brooke County from 1908 through the mid-1920’s. Several historic photos of the trolley and Bethany from that period are included.

Gamble’s article on circus life in West Virginia was published in the fall 2009 issue of the magazine.

Darline Nicholson Breakfast Honors Senior Women

The Panhellenic Council and the Office of Student Life sponsored the 64th Annual Darline Nicholson Breakfast honoring senior women at Bethany College on April 30. South Carolina Supreme Court Justice Kaye Hearn addressed the senior women with advice for succeeding in life. Justice Hearn’s three steps to being a successful woman were to show up, work hard and be nice to everyone you meet. At the breakfast the Joyce Chernenko Outstanding Advisor award was given to Carol Tyler, Director of Health Services, for her dedication to and support of the female students of Bethany College. Wilfrid W. Csaplar Jr., Professor of Economics, attended the Midwest Economic Development conference in St. Louis during spring break in March. While there Csaplar chaired a session in Economic Development and acted as a discussant for a paper entitled “Taxes, Public Goods and Policies of (In)Competent Politicians,” authored by Odilon Camara of the University of South Carolina.

World Languages & Culture
Heidelberg exchange student and special education major Kathrin Brandt and First Year Spanish & German Education student Gerhard Schultze attended the 58th Annual Northeast Conference on the Teaching of Foreign Languages in Baltimore, Md., April 2-3. Accompanied by World Language Professors Joseph Lovano, Harald Menz and Eric Bennett, they attended a variety of workshops and presentations related to the conference topic “Strengthening Connections: Colleagues, Content, & Curriculum.” The group also met with alumnae Beth Degges ’03 and Jackie Berda ’00, who also attended the conference. Degges and Berda were both Spanish/education majors at Bethany and now hold positions at Maryland and Pennsylvania high schools.

Gray ’09 Receives Grant from United Arts Appeal
Casey R. Gray (B.A. Music, 2009) has recently been informed that he is the recipient of a 2011 United Arts Appeal Project Pool grant. The awards are given to non-profit organizations and individual artists in Chautauqua County, New York State. UAA President Rick Davis observed, “The United Arts Appeal awards grants for career development and artistic projects that benefit the cultural life of Chautauqua County. We received a significant number of quality applications this year and are pleased to be able to support these worthwhile projects.” After being screened for eligibility and fulfillment of requirements, applications were reviewed by an independent allocations panel made up of artists and community leaders. Their recommendations were then approved by the United Arts Appeal board. Gray will perform an organ recital and provide children’s programming at the First United Methodist Church of Fredonia, N.Y., where he serves as organist.

Casey, a former student of David J. Rudari (Assistant Professor of Music), is completing the coursework and recitals for the completion of the Master of Music in Voice Performance at SUNY Fredonia in May. He is a student of Professor Laurie Lasher Tramuta.

Library Hosts Murder Mystery Party

The T.W. Phillips Memorial Library held a Murder Mystery event on the night of April 16. Based loosely on the board game "Clue," guests enjoyed food and refreshments before breaking up into search parties. Each team journeyed through the library locating hidden clues to help them discover "whodunit." Once each team located their set of 15 clues, they raced to solve the mystery. The first team to correctly identify the suspect and the weapon received iTunes gift cards for their successful sleuthing. Several murder mystery themed door prizes were awarded and all guests received party favors including the symbolic magnifying glass. Reviews of the evening were extremely positive. The Murder Mystery event was envisioned, organized, and hosted by the library's Student Supervisors: Eileen Campbell, Taylor Morris, Catherine Papp, Nicole Salopek and Emily Sechrest.

Fedor Earns A Top Spot in Hiram College 2011 Echo Student Literary Competition

Bethany College student Haley Fedor recently won second place in Hiram College’s 2011 Echo Student Literary Competition fiction division. Fedor, a senior English and French major from Munhall, Pa., submitted a story titled “A New Set of Wheels.” She received a cash prize of $100. The winners will be published in The Echo 2011 Student Literary Anthology.
