Faculty Spotlight
Visual and Performing Arts
Students in the Period Styles for the Theatre class, along with Tracie Duncan, assistant professor of theatre and director of technical theatre, journeyed to Jamestown Settlement and Colonial Williamsburg in Williamsburg, Va., on February 18-20. Participants took a “behind the scenes” tour of the galleries in Jamestown and the Costume Shops, led by Christopher Daley, head of Historic Costuming for the Jamestown and Yorktown state sites. They had the opportunity to examine original garments from the 17th and 18th century, as well as the reproductions worn by the staff and interpreters at the parks.

South Carolina Supreme Court Justice Kaye Hearn to Speak at Bethany College Darline Nicholson Breakfast
Kaye Hearn, a 1972 Bethany graduate and the second woman to serve on the South Carolina Supreme Court, will address Bethany College senior women at this year’s Darline Nicholson Breakfast. The event, scheduled for April 30 at 9:30 a.m. in Benedum Commons as part of the College’s Alumni Weekend 2011, is a long-standing tradition at Bethany and was established to honor female students, faculty and community members.

Stanley Wolfe ’01 was honored by Lowes and the University of Maryland on February 5 with the Top Terp Excellence in Education Award. Wolfe was honored with an on-court presentation before the Maryland vs. Wake Forest men’s basketball game. The award is given to recognize influential educators throughout the community who have demonstrated "Excellence in Education.” Wolfe is a school administrator at Northwestern High School in Baltimore, Md.

Educational Leaders Represent Higher Education Institutions at Capitol
Leaders from the West Virginia Higher Education Commission, West Virginia Council for Community and Technical College Education and West Virginia Independent Colleges and Universities Inc. hosted the 2011 annual Higher Education Day at the Legislature February 17 at the state Capitol.
Individuals from a variety of West Virginia colleges and universities presented displays, distributed information and answered questions throughout the morning. Vice President for Institutional Advancement Sven de Jong was accompanied by Assistant to the President Mort Gamble and Renner Visiting Scholar, Assistant Professor of Communications and Chair of the Department of Communications and Media Arts M.E. Yancosek Gamble in representing Bethany College. Governor Earl Ray Tomblin presented event sponsors and participating institutions with a proclamation declaring February 17, 2011, Higher Education Day.
The event was initiated to honor West Virginia’s higher education institutions and to inform potential students, policymakers and the general public about post-secondary educational opportunities.

Faculty Spotlight
History and Political Science
Marc B. Sable, assistant professor of political science and director of international studies, presented a public lecture, "Mubarak's Egypt--And After" in the Academic Parlor on February 15. Sable explained the current political unrest in Egypt, its roots in Egyptian government policies over the past 30 years, and the prospects for a transition to electoral democracy, the role of the army and the Muslim Brotherhood in the new regime, as well as international implications.

David J. Rudari, assistant professor of music and director of the Bethany College Choir continues in his appointment as Director of Music at the Cathedral of St. Joseph, Diocese of Wheeling-Charleston. He will appear as Baritone soloist in the Requiem setting of Gabriel Fauré with the West Virginia University Choirs in the first of the Stained Glass Series Concerts at the Cathedral on February 27 at 3 p.m.
Dr. Rudari served as an adjudicator at the WVMEA Solo and Ensemble Festival held at West Liberty State University on February12.
Assistant Professor of Music Pandel Collaros has uploaded a vintage audio file just received from Denis Blaser, German exchange student at Bethany from 1999-2000. The file is a 2000 Bethany College Choir performance in Commencement Hall of the Kyrie Mass movement by Collaros. Bethany President Active with W.Va. Congressional Delegation
President Miller visited with U.S. Senator Joe Manchin, Congressman David McKinley and Barbara Pryor of U.S. Senator Jay Rockefeller’s staff this past week to discuss federal legislation as it impacts private higher education. As the new Congress considers federal budget cuts, Miller carried the private college case for continued funding of the federal student aid programs. Miller met with Sen. Manchin and Ms. Pryor in Washington, D.C., and hosted Rep. McKinley on campus.

Black Alliance Plans Diversity Panel for Black History Month
Bethany’s Black Alliance will host a Diversity Panel on campus as part of Black History Month. The event is scheduled for February 16 in Weimer Lecture Hall from 4-5 p.m. The panel will consist of students who have volunteered to answer questions posed by the audience. Questions should pertain to the experiences students have had as members of a particular “group” (based on ethnicity, race, sexual orientation, ability, etc.) in society and on campus. Rev. Scott Thayer will serve as moderator. The event was initiated to educate and introduce alternative perspectives in order to debunk stereotypes and foster tolerance and empathy for diversity on the Bethany campus.

Sable to Speak on Unfolding Events in Egypt
Dr. Marc B. Sable, Bethany College assistant professor of political science and director of international studies, will present "Mubarak's Egypt — And After" on Tuesday, February 15, at 4 p.m. in the Academic Parlor. Sable will explain the current political unrest in Egypt, its roots in Egyptian government policies during the past 30 years, and the possible outcomes — including democracy, a police state and Islamist revolution. Sable’s presentation will be followed by a question-and-answer session and light refreshments.

Psychology
Several students and faculty in Bethany’s Department of Psychology have had papers accepted for presentation at the annual meeting of the Eastern Psychological Association this March in Cambridge, Mass. Papers include: “Reality television’s influence on romantic relationship expectations” by Angela Tipton and Katrina Cooper, assistant professor of psychology and director of first year studies; “The effects of ovulation on attractiveness” by Meghan DeLorenzo and Katrina Cooper; “College-aged drinking: Are there different motivations for students over and under 21?” by Katrina Cooper; “You CAN tell a book (at least in part) by its cover” by John Hull — professor of psychology — Levi Naylor, and Debra Hull; and “Perceived characteristics of children’s toys” by Jena Hatmaker and John Hull. Additionally, Hull is coauthor of two other papers to be presented by students from Wheeling Jesuit University. Members of the Psychology Club will join the presenters in Cambridge.

Bethany Football Players Help Move Young Abuse Victims to New Home
Five Bethany football players recently joined the College’s efforts to support the work of Wheeling’s St. John’s Home for Children — a group that provides care for boys age eight to 14 who have suffered abuse or struggle with behavioral problems. Students Matt Grimard, Ryan Busch, CJ Thomas, Robert Baker and Tyler Babinchok spent Saturday morning moving furniture and appliances to a newly constructed home that will expand the organization’s ability to serve area youth.

James J. Harris ’84 was recently promoted to Vice President, Real Estate – Legal for Limited Brands, Inc. located in Columbus, Ohio. Harris joined Limited Brands in June 2005. Limited Brands, through Victoria’s Secret, Pink, Bath & Body Works, La Senza, C.O. Bigelow, White Barn Candle, and Henri Bendel, is an international company. It operates more than 2,650 specialty stores in the United States, and its brands are sold in more than 700 company-operated and franchised additional locations worldwide. Harris's daughter, Margaret is a Junior at Bethany majoring in Communications and Media Arts.
Denise Ritter '98 was featured in the Kappa Delta national magazine The Angelos. She was one of nine alumnae highlighted in a winter 2011 article about blogging.

Comedian Kevin Shea Coming to Bethany
Bethany’s Student Activities Council has announced that comedian Kevin Shea will perform on February 7 in the College’s Renner Too, located in the basement of Phillips Hall. The event will begin at 8:30 p.m. and is free and open to the public.
Shea was born in Seoul, Korea, and after being adopted was moved to the United States. He grew up in Bethlehem, Pa., and later attended the Indiana University of Pennsylvania. Upon graduation, Shea moved to California to begin his stand-up comedy career. He has been featured on major comedy shows such as Tosh.0, Jimmy Kimmel Live and Comedy Central’s Premium Blend. He was named the winner of NBC’s Stand Up for Diversity in 2009. Shea is also currently on tour with the Kims of Comedy Tour.

The Bethany College-Hancock County Response to Intervention-Professional Development School Grant team completed a joint presentation at the Annual West Virginia Reading Association at the Greenbrier in November. The title of the presentation was “RTI Under Construction- What is in your toolkit?” Assistant Professor of Education Janice Garrison Shepherd presented on reading assessments and interventions for RTI. County board representative Betty McGillen, school principal Dan Enich, and school reading specialists and special education team members (Karen Pitchok, Kelly Summers, and Kathy Griffith, who attended Bethany) presented on their parts in this successful implementation at Weir Middle School. The implementation will be moving to the high school level for the final two years of the grant.

Larry Grimes, professor of English emeritus and director of church relations, was included in The Southern Poetry Anthology: Vol. III, Contemporary Appalachian Poets. Also included in the anthology was work by Bethany graduate Jessie Janeshek. Janeshek’s first volume of poems, Invisible Mink, was published in November 2010.
